Waterfall Resort In Alaska Celebrates Local History By Raising Honorary Totem Poles

Ketchikan, Alaska (IPRWIRE) Mon, Feb. 19th, 2007 -- In honor of its 25th anniversary this spring, Waterfall Resort in Southeast Alaska (www.waterfallresort.com/inm.html) will raise two totem poles carved by the grandson of a Haida chief who presented a totem pole to the Waterfall Cannery in 1937. In a unique tribute to Waterfall Resort’s historic ties to the Native Alaskan community, the Resort has commissioned the totem poles from Lee Wallace, who recently began carving the poles in Saxman Village, just south of Ketchikan, Alaska.

Waterfall Resort, now a nationally recognized sport fishing resort, was home to one of the most productive salmon canneries in the early 1900s. Lee Wallace’s grandfather, John Dewey Wallace, lived in a Haida community near Waterfall and presented a 35-foot totem pole to the cannery superintendent 70 years ago. At that time, most of the fish sold to the cannery came from Native Alaskan fishermen from Hydaburg, Craig, Klawock, Metlakatla, and Ketchikan.

That totem pole stood next to the cannery’s general store for many decades, until it mysteriously disappeared. The totem pole eventually was found in two pieces in Seattle, and a philanthropic group refurbished it and raised it adjacent to the Montlake Cut in Seattle, near the University of Washington.

Lee Wallace decided to interpret his grandfather’s “Story of North Island” in two totems, the eagle and the master carpenter. Photo updates of the carving process will be posted at www.waterfallresort.com/totems.html.

Waterfall Resort also announces that it will open for its 25th season on May 26th, 2007. The 2,300 guests that visit the resort each summer stay in remodeled historic buildings that housed cannery workers nearly 100 years ago. Fishing guides take guests to some of the regions most productive sport fishing locations, where Native Alaskan fishermen have trolled for generations.

Alaska Inside Passage Resorts Finds Gold with Eight New Premier Destinations

Santa Barbara, California (IPRWIRE) Wed, Jan. 31st, 2007 -- Alaska Inside Passage Resorts (www.aipr.com) is proud to announce its acquisition of eight new premium Alaskan destinations marketing contracts. The Alaska-based travel consortium now represents 24 unique Alaskan lodges, resorts, and yacht charters. Their extensive history and experience in this field has propelled them to being one of the leaders in the Alaska destinations industry.

A company spokesperson recently stated: "When planning an Alaskan vacation the options can be daunting. How does one begin to sort through endless Internet listings, advertisements and articles? This is a dilemma faced by most travelers planning an Alaskan adventure. Alaskan vacation planning is a specialty and requires an understanding of the various activities, float plane and ferry schedules, fishing regulations and availability, program details, safety issues, and more. Consulting with an Alaskan Adventure Travel Specialist will insure that a competent and trusted operator will facilitate your adventure. Because Alaska has a short tourism season, we recommend planning well in advance. The holidays provide just the break to start planning your summer vacation. Availability for accommodations and air transportation can become scarce for those waiting until the spring to start planning."

The company works with both corporate and non-corporate clients. They are especially well suited for those companies and individuals who have a short time frame for planning and executing Alaskan sport fishing or soft adventure vacations. They offer a free consultation service which can be very helpful for those wishing to set up an event or vacation, and they offer all-inclusive packages which many past clients have found very helpful.

Some of the more popular events that they currently host include: saltwater fishing, fresh water fishing, whale watching, shrimp and crab fishing, bear watching, fly out and sightseeing, kayaking, glacier encounters, and many other fun and exciting events.

For more information on Alaska’s Inside Passage Resorts, please visit www.aipr.com, where you can find more information concerning their programs and various offerings.
